Shipping And The environment
Environmental regulations : an international approach
Long-term vision
Despite the fact that shipping is much more environmentally-friendly than other transportation methods, standards are also becoming stricter in this sector.
In 2018 member countries of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreed to reduce average carbon intensity (CO2 per tonne-mile) by at least 40% by 2030 and 70% by 2050, as well as to cut total emissions by at least 50% by 2050, relative to 2008.
A multitude of regulations have been implemented, or are about to be, in the shipping sector.
Existing And Upcoming Environmental Regulations
The Impact Of Regulations
- Vessel newbuilds will emit less CO2
- Non-fuel-efficient vessels will be costly to operate, if even allowed
- Older vessels will be “scrapped” or taken out of the market
